#52 Ancestors 2022 Week 17 Document: Timeline for William Boswell Scrivener and Sarah Jane Barber

 I have decided to create a timeline to document my 2X-great grandparents, William Boswell Scrivener and Sarah Jane (Sally) Barber.

20 September 1817: John Scrivener (See my previous blog on his service in the War of 1812) marries Eliza Smith Boswell at her father's home in Nottingham, Prince George's County MD.  They reside in Friendship, Anne Arundel County MD.

1819: John Henry Scrivener is born in Friendship, Anne Arundel County MD.

1823: Sarah Jane Scrivener is born in Friendship, Anne Arundel County MD.

1824: Samuel Wesley Scrivener is born in Friendship, Anne Arundel County MD.

1827: Elizabeth Ann Scrivener is born in Friendship, Anne Arundel County MD.

31 October 1828: William Boswell Scrivener is born in Friendship, Anne Arundel County MD. He is named for his mother's brother, William Henry Smith Boswell. 


Context 1828-1839: US Presidents John Quincy Adams, Andrew Jackson, Martin Van Buren.  Maryland Governors Joseph Kent, a Republican and a distant cousin of William, Daniel Martin, Thomas King Carroll, George Howard, James Thomas, Thomas Veazey, and William Grayson.  Construction begins on the first US passenger railroad, the Baltimore and Ohio. Baltimore Sun begins publication. US Population 17 M.
 


1829: Elizabeth Sydney Scrivener is born in Friendship, Anne Arundel County MD.

1832: Francis George Scrivener is born in Friendship, Anne Arundel County MD.

1834: James Edward Scrivener is born in Friendship, Anne Arundel County MD.

1835: Mary Priscilla Scrivener is born in Friendship, Anne Arundel County MD.

25 November 1835: Sarah Jane Kent Barber, the daughter of Jonathan Yates Barber and Mary Wheeler Kent, is born at Silverstone, Calvert County MD.

1838: Maria Louisa Scrivener and Emily Augusta Scrivener are born in  Friendship, Anne Arundel County MD.

Context 1840-1849:US Presidents Martin Van Buren, William Henry Harrison, John Tyler, James Polk. Maryland Governors William Grayson, Francis Thomas, Thomas Pratt, Phillip Thomas. Queen Victoria marries Prince Albert. Charles Dickens publishes A Christmas Carol. Samuel Morse sends the first telegraph message from Washington DC to Baltimore. First wagon train travels the Oregon Trail. US Naval Academy opens. Frederick Douglass publishes his Narrative. Edgar Allan Poe dies in Baltimore. Harriet Tubman escapes to Philadelphia.  US Population 23 M.

1843: Rose Matilda Scrivener is born in Friendship, Anne Arundel County MD.

27 August 1849: John Scrivener dies in Anne Arundel County MD.  His son William inherits a farm and other property from his father's will.

Context 1850-1859: US Presidents Zachary Taylor, Millard Filmore, Franklin Pierce, James Buchanan.  Governors of Maryland Philip Thomas, Enoch Lowe, Thomas Ligon, Thomas Hicks. Harriet Beecher Stowe publishes Uncle Tom's Cabin. Herman Melville publishes Moby Dick. Commodore Matthew Perry reaches Japan. Maryland Agricultural College, now University of Maryland, founded. Peabody Institute founded in Baltimore. 
John Brown leads an attack on the Federal Arsenal at Harper's Ferry.  US Population 31 M.


29 March 1850: William B. Scrivener, farmer, age 22, appears in the Census of Anne Arundel County MD 8th District.  His real estate is valued at $6000.  His brother Samuel and his mother Eliza live next to William. 

1853: William's brother, Francis George Scrivener, dies in Anne Arundel County MD.

August 1855: William B. Scrivener purchases Holly Hill (which he called Rose Valley) from the estate of his deceased brother-in-law, John Howe Somervell, in order to rescue his sister Sally from bankruptcy.

November 1856: William Boswell Scrivener marries Sarah Jane Kent Barber at her parents' residence in Calvert County MD.  They live at Rose Valley in Anne Arundel County MD.

October 1857: Mary Wheeler Kent Scrivener is born at Rose Valley, Anne Arundel County MD.

8 March 1859: William Boswell Scrivener Jr. is born at Rose Valley, Anne Arundel County MD.

Context: 1860-1869: US Presidents: James Buchanan, Abraham Lincoln, Andrew Johnson, Ulysses S. Grant. Abraham Lincoln wins the Presidency in 1860, although he gets only 3 votes in Anne Arundel County.  Governors of Maryland: Thomas Hicks (Know-Nothing Party), Augustus Bradford, Thomas Swann. South Carolina secedes from the Union; Maryland does not, although there are many Southern sympathizers. First casualties of the Civil War occur in Baltimore where MA troops were stoned. "Maryland, My Maryland" written in response. Maryland slaves emancipated by the State Constitution of 1864. Pony Express begins mail service to California. US purchases Alaska.US Population 40 M.

27 August 1860: William B. Scrivener, farmer, age 36, is enumerated in the Census of Anne Arundel County MD, 8th District.  His real estate is valued at $25,500 and his personal property (including slaves) is valued at $11,000.  In his household are his wife Sarah, age 21; his daughter Mary, age 3; his son William, age 1; and farmhand William Cunningham and farm manager William Ford. The slave schedule in 1860 shows that William had 17 slaves: 7 male, 4 female, and 6 children.

1862: Sarah Jane Barber Scrivener is born at Rose Valley, Anne Arundel County MD.

29 October 1862: William Scrivener and his brothers Samuel and James are enrolled for military service by the Adjutant General's office.  However, like most of the men in the area, they are excused by the Surgeon who examined them (a Southern sympathizer). 

15 January 1863: William's brother, John Henry Scrivener, dies in Anne Arundel County MD.

11 June 1863: William's sister, Elizabeth Sydney Scrivener Welch, dies in Anne Arundel County MD.

1864: Leila Mary Scrivener is born at Rose Valley, Anne Arundel County MD.

1864: William B. Scrivener is taxed $85 on income of $1700. 

4 January 1865: Frank Phillip Scrivener (my great-grandfather) is born at Rose Valley, Anne Arundel County MD.

1866: Kate Estelle Scrivener is born at Rose Valley, Anne Arundel County MD.

1869: Lillian Eliza Scrivener is born at Rose Valley, Anne Arundel County MD.

9 October 1869: William Scrivener is a trustee for a primary school at Friendship MD, where his father had been a founding trustee.

Context 1870-1879: US Presidents Ulysses S. Grant, (See my previous blog about Grant's wife, my cousin Julia Dent Grant.) Rutherford B. Hayes.  Maryland Governors Oden Bowie, William Pinkney Whyte, James Black Groome, John Lee Carroll. Construction begins on the Brooklyn Bridge. Transcontinental Railroad is completed. Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony form the National Women's Suffrage Association. The 15th Amendment to the Constitution is passed giving Negroes the right to vote.  Maryland voted against ratification. Yellowstone established as the first national park. Montgomery Ward becomes the first mail order house. The first running of the Preakness Stakes.  Thomas Edison invents the incandescent lightbulb. Johns Hopkins University opens in Baltimore. Louis Pasteur develops the concept of inoculation. The young men of the Baltimore Athletic Club play lacrosse. The Baltimore Orioles founded as a team.   US Population: 50 M.

21 June 1870: William B. Scrivener is enumerated in the 8th District of Anne Arundel County MD, farmer, age 40.  His real estate is valued at $10,000 and his personal property at $2000.  In his household are his wife Sarah, age 31; Children, Mary 13, William 11, Sallie 9, Frank 7, Leila 5, Kate 3, and Eliza 1.  His brother Samuel is also in this household. US Population: 39 M.

1870: Frederick William Scrivener is born at Rose Valley, Anne Arundel County MD. 




23 April 1874: William Scrivener's mother, Eliza Boswell Scrivener, dies in Baltimore MD.

6 November 1875: William's sister, Maria Louise Scrivener Hanson, dies in Washington DC.

1876: Jonathan Yates Scrivener is born at Rose Valley, Anne Arundel County MD.

1877: William Kent Scrivener is born at Rose Valley, Anne Arundel County MD. 

November-December 1877: Sarah Barber Scrivener's parents, Jonathan Yates Barber and Mary Wheeler Kent die within a month of each other in Calvert County MD. They are buried at All Saints Cemetery in Calvert County MD.

Context 1880-1889: US Presidents Rutherford B. Hayes, James Garfield, Chester Arthur, Grover Cleveland, Benjamin Harrison. Maryland Governors William T. Hamilton, Robert Milligan McLane, Emory Lloyd, Elihu Jackson. The Eiffel Tower is completed in Paris. The Johnstown Flood takes 2295 lives. The ice cream sundae is invented.  Cy Young pitches his first winning game. Johns Hopkins Hospital dedicated in Baltimore. Chesapeake and Potomac Telephone Company formed. Clara Barton establishes the Red Cross. Cornerstone laid for the Statue of Liberty. Enoch Pratt Free Library opens in Baltimore. US Population 63 M.

1 June 1880: William B. Scrivener, farmer, is enumerated in the 8th District of Anne Arundel County MD, age 49, along with his wife Sarah J. age 41 and children Mary 22, William 20, Phillip 18, Sallie 16, Lela 14, Kate 12, Frederick 10, Lily 8, John 6 and Kent 3.  [You can easily see why he wanted to have a primary school in Friendship!]  




August 1880: William B. Scrivener and others in Friendship form a committee and pass a resolution urging the Anne Arundel County Commissioners to support a subscription for a railroad line between Baltimore and Drum Point in southern Calvert County MD. 

7 September 1882: Sarah Barber Scrivener's brother, Phillip Daniel Barber, dies in Calvert County MD. 

18 March 1884: William's sister, Mary Priscilla Scrivener Bird, dies in Baltimore County MD. See my previous blog about The Bird Family

Context 1890-1899: US Presidents Benjamin Harrison, Grover Cleveland, William McKinley.   Governors of Maryland Frank Brown, Lloyd Lowndes. The Battleship Maine is blown up in Havana Harbor. Teddy Roosevelt charges San Juan Hill. Scott Joplin introduces Ragtime. Construction begun on Dahlgren Hall at US Naval Academy.  Kodak introduces the Brownie camera. Steel plant constructed at Sparrows Point. US Population: 76M.  Average life expectancy: 46.6 years for men, 48.7 years for women.




16 December 1891: Leila Mary Scrivener marries Howe Somervell Allnut at All Saints Church, Calvert County MD. 


3 October 1892: William Boswell Scrivener's first grandchild James John Allnut is born in Calvert County MD. 

28 April 1893: Sarah Barber Scrivener's brother, Jonathan Yates Barber, dies in Baltimore MD. 

16 December 1893: Grandson Howe Allnut born in Calvert County MD. 

8 July 1895: William Boswell Scrivener dies in Anne Arundel County MD at the age of 66 after a fall from a horse. He is buried in All Saints Cemetery, Sunderland, Calvert County MD. 

19 August 1895: The inventory of William's estate shows a number of farm animals (hogs, horses, cows, oxen), farm implements (wagons, plows, chains, tools) and household goods (wood stove, oil lanterns, cane chairs, table, wardrobe, bedding, oil cloth floor coverings, etc.)  The estate was valued at $1736. 



July 1896: William B. Scrivener's property is put up for sale by his executors. The Advertisement below gives a good sense of his property. Notice the reference at the bottom to travelling via the Weems Line steamship to reach the property.  The water route was still better than the roads for travel. 

William's sons purchase the home farm and his wife Sarah continues to live at Rose Valley.







6 October 1897: Sarah Jane Barber Scrivener marries George Bourne Gantt at All Saints Church, Calvert County MD.

7 September 1899: William's sister, Rose Matilda Scrivener Burgy, dies in Washington DC.

25 November 1899: Frank Phillip Scrivener marries Louise Keene Gwynn in Prince George's County MD. They live in Baltimore where Frank works as a bookkeeper. See my previous blog about their life in Baltimore. 

Context 1900-1909: US Presidents William McKinley, Theodore Roosevelt, William Howard Taft. Maryland Governors John W. Smith, Edwin Warfield, Austin Lane Crothers. Queen Victoria dies. American Automobile Association is formed. First World Series played in baseball. Wright brothers make their first flight. Helen Keller writes The Story of my Life. Albert Einstein publishes his Theory of Relativity. Earthquake and fire destroy most of San Francisco. Annapolis Emergency Hospital opened. First performance of "Anchors Aweigh" at Army-Navy game. Ford introduces the Model T. US Population: 93M.




22 February 1900: Grandchild Sallie Chew Gantt is born in Calvert County MD.

22 March 1900: Lillian Eliza Scrivener marries Sgt. Robert Franklin Garner in Baltimore MD.

23 June 1900: S.J. Scrivener, age 60, widow, is enumerated in the 8th District of Anne Arundel County MD with her son Frederick, age 27 and daughter Mary, age 35.

27 August 1900: Grandchild Frank Phillip Scrivener Jr. is born in Baltimore MD.

14 March 1901: Grandchild Eleanor McPherson Garner is born in Anne Arundel County MD.

14 March 1902: William's sister, Emily Augusta Scrivener Ripley  (See my previous blog about her life.) dies in Janesville WI.

15 October 1902: Jonathan Yates Scrivener marries Jean Francis Mackintosh in Baltimore MD. 

15 April 1903: Frederick William Scrivener marries Annie Vaughn at St. James Parish, Anne Arundel County MD.

8 November 1903: Grandchild George Bourne Gantt Jr. is born in Calvert County MD.

February 1904: 70 Blocks of Baltimore devasted by the Great Fire.  Several of William and Sarah's children were living in Baltimore at this time, including Frank, Lily, Jonathan, and Kent. See my previous blog on the Great Fire

6 April 1904: William's brother, Samuel Wesley Scrivener, dies in Calvert County MD.

1 May 1904: William's sister, Sarah Jane Scrivener Somervell, dies in Washington DC.

6 December 1905: Kate Estelle Scrivener marries Harry Weems Wilkinson in Baltimore MD. 

Context 1910: William Howard Taft is President of the United States. Austin Crowther is Governor of Maryland.  Urban population in Maryland exceeds 50%. Penn Station opens in New York City. Prohibition in effect in 8 states. US Population: 93 M. 

1 April 1910: Sarah J. Scrivener is enumerated in the 8th District of Anne Arundel County, widow, age 72, along with her son William Boswell, farmer, age 49 and her daughter Mary, age 47.

Sarah Jane Kent Barber Scrivener died in Baltimore MD at the home of her son, Jonathan Yates Scrivener on 4 September 1911 at age 75.  She is buried beside her husband in All Saints Cemetery, Calvert County MD. 

Of William and Sarah's ten children, three never married: Mary, William, and Kent.
